FAQ
I would like to enrol my child at the European School but I am not a member of the staff of the EU institutions. Is it possible? Is there a waiting list?

Yes, you can enrol your child if, after all the children in categories I and II have been enrolled, there is stil a place available in the class in question. Some Schools - the Brussels ones in particular - are almost full to capacity. It should be noted that you will only receive a final answer after the closing date for enrolments. It is therefore wise to make alternative arrangements in case it is not possible for your child to be admitted to the European School.

What is the minimum age requirement for admission to the European School?

Four.

Who should I contact to enrol my child?

You should approach the School in which you wish to enrol him/her. Each School is responsible for its own enrolments. The OSGES does not have enrolment forms.

I would like to reserve a place for my baby, as I am afraid that there will be no places left when he/she reaches nursery school age? What can I do?

We are very sorry but this is not possible. The Schools do not have a long-term waiting list. You must wait until the school year before your child is due to start school to apply for admission.

I would like to enrol my child at the European School and have found, to my great surprise, that there is no European School in my country. Why is that?

For a European School to be set up, firstly, an EU institution or body has to have its seat near the future School. The reason is that the role of the European Schools is to cater for the educational needs of the children of the staff of the European institutions. Secondly, the government of the State in which the new School will be situated h as to submit a request for its setting up to the Board of Governors of the European Schools. The Board of Governors cannot decide on its own initiative to set up a new School, even where a major European institution is situated. This accounts for the fact that there is no European School in Strasbourg, for example. As France has never submitted a request for the setting up of a European School, the children of the staff of the European Parliament in Strasbourg attend either local schools or the European School, Karlsruhe.

Before moving house, I wish to check that a school bus service will run near to my new place of residence. Who can I contact?

School transport is organised by the Parents' Associations of the different Schools. You should therefore approach the Parents' Association of the School which your child attends (or is to attend) for information about school bus services(routes, timetables, cost, etc.) Most of the Parents' Associations have a website, which you can access by visiting the pages of our website featuring the ten Schools.

Do the European Schools run correspondence courses?

No, we do not run any correspondence courses.

I would like to work for the European Schools. Where should I apply?

For a post of seconded teacher (a full-time post held for a maximum of nine years), consult the 'Recruitment' section of our site. For a post of locally recruited part-time teacher or a job as a member of the administrative and ancillary staff, apply direct to the School in which you would like to work.

I would like to know the equivalence between the different years in my country’s education system and the years in the European School system. Where can I find the answer?
